Supplementing Homemade Dog Meals

In my nutrition counseling sessions, I often notice that many dog owners underestimate the importance of supplementing homemade dog food. Each dog has unique nutritional needs influenced by factors such as age, breed, activity level, and overall health. Homemade dog meals allow owners to tailor their pet’s diet to specific requirements, such as addressing health concerns or allergies. Additionally, homemade meals give owners complete control over the quality, origin, and ingredients of their dog’s food. However, it’s crucial to supplement these meals appropriately to ensure they provide all the necessary nutrients for a balanced diet.

Why Is Supplementation Necessary?

While homemade dog meals include proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, they typically lack certain essential nutrients in adequate quantities. This is why supplementation with appropriate mineral mixtures (supplements) is indispensable. Supplements help fill potential nutrient gaps and ensure your dog receives every essential mineral and micronutrient needed for optimal health. Thus, proper supplementation supports your dog’s vitality and well-being. Alongside minerals and micronutrients, vitamins and essential fatty acids should also be considered.

What Are Supplements?

Mineral mixtures are carefully formulated combinations of minerals and micronutrients. They contain vital nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, iodine, copper, and zinc, all of which are indispensable for your dog’s health and well-being. If a homemade dog meal is not adequately supplemented, nutritional deficiencies may occur, potentially leading to long-term health issues such as:

  • Skeletal issues resulting from insufficient calcium and phosphorus.
  • Skin- and coat problems caused by a lack of essential fatty acids or certain vitamins.

How to Supplement properly:

To ensure your dog’s diet is nutritionally complete, it is recommended to have an individualized diet plan created by a veterinary nutritionist.

A balanced homemade dog meal should include a variety of protein sources (e.g., chicken, beef, fish), vegetables, and carbohydrates (e.g., rice, potatoes) while also considering any intolerances or specific health conditions.

This diversity allows for a more comprehensive nutritional profile and proper nutrient supply.

To meet your dog’s specific dietary needs, consider adding healthy fats, such as fish oil or flax seed oil, which are rich in essential fatty acids as well as with a suitable vitamin and mineral mixture to ensure a complete nutritional balance.
